Key Findings

Citywide rat complaints fell 22% from January to July 2026 versus the same period in 2025, according to DSNY.

On a rolling 12-month basis, a more apples-to-apples comparison, complaints fell 27.9 %, from 36,595 (July 2024 to June 2025) to 26,390 (July 2025 to June 2026).

Brooklyn recorded 36% of the 42,808 complaints filed in the wider study window, the largest share of any borough.

East Harlem’s ZIP code 10035 had the most complaints of any ZIP code across the full study period, but it is no longer the city’s worst ZIP right now. It fell 71.6 % in the most recent 12 months and dropped out of the citywide top five.

The new leader is Highbridge in the Bronx, ZIP 10452, where complaints rose 23.2 %. Highbridge is not one of the neighborhoods currently scheduled to get bins by 2027.

Only one of the city’s 59 community districts, Manhattan’s CD9, is fully containerized right now.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office says the city’s trash containerization push is working. Citywide 311 complaints about rats dropped 22% between January and July 2026, compared with the same period in 2025, according to DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson. Officials point to one cause: trash is finally moving out of black bags and into sealed containers.

What isn’t reported is that the city’s own numbers tell a different story “beneath” the headline. The containerization timeline meant to fix it extends to 2031 for most neighborhoods.

The Headline Number, and What Backs It Up

DSNY’s 22% figure covers January 1 through July 31, 2026, compared with the same seven months in 2025. Commissioner Anderson cited it in an August 2026 interview.

In the most recent full rolling 12-month period, July 2025 through June 2026, citywide 311 rodent complaints fell from 36,595 to 26,390, a decline of 27.9%. Every borough declined on this basis. Manhattan fell fastest, down 34%, while Brooklyn remains the largest source of complaints by raw volume even after a 27.5% drop.

The Story Underneath: East Harlem’s Rat Problem Didn’t Disappear, It Moved

For years, ZIP code 10035 in East Harlem was the “rattiest” address in New York City. Across the full study window used for this piece, January 2025 through June 2026, it still holds that title with 1,463 total complaints, more than any other ZIP.

But look at the most recent 12 months, and a different picture appears. East Harlem’s complaints collapsed 71.6 %, from 1,922 in the prior 12-month period to 545, and it dropped out of the citywide top five entirely.

East Harlem sits inside a designated Rat Mitigation Zone, where the city has concentrated extra containerization and enforcement resources, which lines up with the timing of the drop.

The new citywide leader is Highbridge, in the Bronx, ZIP code 10452. Complaints there rose 23.2%, from 564 to 695, in the same 12-month window when East Harlem fell. Highbridge is not one of the six Bronx neighborhoods currently scheduled to receive Empire Bins by 2027. That list covers Hunts Point, Longwood, University Heights, Mount Hope, Morris Heights, and Fordham Heights, none of which is Highbridge.

To be careful here: 311 complaint data measures where rats get reported, not where they live. A drop in one ZIP and a rise in another could reflect actual rat movement, differences in resident reporting habits, or both.

But if containerization resources keep following the same list of announced neighborhoods, Highbridge is currently outside that plan even as its numbers move in the wrong direction.

Where the Rollout Stands

Marking his 100th day in office, Mayor Mamdani committed to a specific schedule: at least one fully containerized community district in every borough by the end of 2027, and full citywide containerization by the end of 2031.

Manhattan. Community District 9, West Harlem, has been fully containerized since June 2025, the only district in the city where the rollout is complete. A separate DSNY rulemaking sets October 18, 2026, as the implementation date for medium-sized buildings in that district that have not opted into on-street containers. Four more Manhattan neighborhoods, the West Village, SoHo, Little Italy, and Greenwich Village, are slated for bins by the end of 2027.

Brooklyn. Community District 2, covering Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and Fort Greene, is scheduled to receive Empire Bins this fall, meaning rollout begins now.

The Bronx. Hunts Point, Longwood, University Heights, Mount Hope, Morris Heights, and Fordham Heights are scheduled for bins by the end of 2027. Highbridge, the borough’s fastest-rising complaint ZIP, is not on this list.

Queens. Sunnyside, Hunters Point, and Woodside are named for the 2027 rollout.

Staten Island. St. George, West Brighton, and Port Richmond round out the 2027 list.

More than 6,500 curbside Empire Bins are expected across the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island by the end of 2027. Buildings with 30 or more units will eventually be required to switch over. Smaller buildings can opt in earlier but are not required to yet.

What Businesses Already Have to Do, Regardless of the Timeline

None of the residential deadlines above apply to commercial waste. Businesses citywide have been required to put trash in secured containers since March 2024, more than two years ahead of any residential bin date. Restaurants, offices, and retail spaces must also separate food waste into its own container.

Fines follow a simple structure: $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second, and $200 for every offense after that. A restaurant or office still setting bags directly on the curb is already out of compliance today.

The Rollout Isn’t Without Friction

The program has some real critics. The National Waste and Recycling Association sued the city over commercial waste zone rules, arguing compliance costs could top $33 million per zone.

A report from former Comptroller Brad Lander flagged questions about how DSNY selected zone carters, and one awardee, Cogent, received a notice of violation covering nearly 5,000 counts. Funding for the residential rollout is also still unclear.

The mayor’s office has not said publicly how it will pay for the trucks and bins needed to hit the 2031 date.

What to Do Before Your District’s Bin Day Arrives

Confirm current bins meet DSNY’s rigid, tight-lid standard, not just any covered container.

Make sure food waste goes into a separate, properly labeled container.

If a building has 30 or more units, start budgeting for the eventual switch to city-approved bins well before the district’s official date.

Track the specific community district timeline. A neighborhood scheduled for 2027 can still see enforcement changes earlier, like the October 2026 date already set for Manhattan CD9.

In ZIP codes with rising complaints that aren’t yet on a rollout list, don’t assume bins are coming soon. Ask what interim options, like scheduled pickup adjustments, are available now.

Opura works inside offices, restaurants, and commercial spaces across New York City, Nassau County, and Northern New Jersey, which means keeping clients ahead of DSNY’s containerization and food waste rules is already part of the job. Businesses that want a walkthrough of where their current setup stands can reach out for a custom plan.

Data and Methodology

This piece draws on two different kinds of sources, and they should not be treated the same way.

Official city figures.

DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson stated the 22% decline (January to July 2026 versus January to July 2025) in an August 2026 interview with CBS New York. This is an on-the-record city statistic, not a published dataset. DSNY has not released the underlying complaint counts for that specific seven-month comparison, so we could not independently verify the raw numbers or confirm whether it removed duplicate complaints before calculating this figure.

The containerization schedule, district names, and implementation dates in this piece come directly from NYC Mayor’s Office press releases and DSNY’s public rulemaking record, both primary sources with no third party involved.

The 311 dataset.

Exact windows used: cumulative study period, January 1, 2025 to June 25, 2026 (42,808 total complaints). Rolling 12-month comparison: July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026 (26,390 complaints) versus July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025 (36,595 complaints).

Any journalist or researcher can reproduce or check these figures directly through the NYC Open Data 311 Service Requests dataset by filtering complaint_type to Rodent and setting the date range above.

Sources: NYC Mayor’s Office, DSNY public rulemaking records, CBS New York, Streetsblog NYC, Waste Dive, NYC Open Data, and NYC Rodent Report’s published analysis of NYC Open Data 311 records.

A full apartment deep clean does not require dozens of specialty products. In most cases, a simple kit and a clear checklist work better than a cabinet full of supplies.

Open a window if product labels recommend ventilation

Put laundry, dishes, and loose items away first

Work one room at a time to stay organized

Dust high surfaces before vacuuming or mopping

Read product labels and never mix cleaners unless the label says it is safe (ACI, n.d.; CDC, 2025)

Apartment Cleaning Checklist by Room

Kitchen

The kitchen usually demands the most attention because grease, crumbs, spills, and moisture build up quickly.

Focus on:

Countertops and backsplash

Sink and faucet

Stovetop and control knobs

Microwave (inside and outside)

Cabinet fronts and handles

Refrigerator shelves and door edges

Table and chair surfaces

Trash can lid and surrounding floor

For a deeper clean, include the inside of the oven, the refrigerator interior, and the hard-to-reach edges around or beneath appliances.

Always clean surfaces before sanitizing or disinfecting them. The CDC notes that dirt and residue can reduce the effectiveness of disinfecting products (CDC, 2025).

Bathroom

Bathrooms are small, but often take longer to clean thanks to soap scum, moisture, and mineral buildup.

Clean these areas carefully:

Mirror

Sink and faucet

Countertop

Toilet, including the base and flush handle

Shower walls, tub, and door

Tile and grout where buildup is visible

Light switches and door handles

Floor edges behind the toilet and in corners

In everyday home settings, cleaning alone is usually enough. However, if someone in the household has been sick, disinfecting high-touch surfaces and shared bathroom areas becomes a more important task (CDC, 2025).

And yes, the space behind the toilet matters (even if nobody likes talking about it).

Living Room and Bedroom

These rooms can look tidy while collecting dust on less visible surfaces.

Do not skip:

Lamps and lampshades

Window sills

Side tables

Remote controls

Headboards

Under-bed edges

Closet floors

Upholstery seams

Rugs and corners

Wash bedding regularly, vacuum soft surfaces, and clean electronics carefully, following manufacturer guidance. If your apartment sits near busy streets or you often leave windows open, dust can accumulate surprisingly quickly, so a light weekly reset goes a long way (ACI, n.d.).

Entryway and High-Touch Points

In many apartments, the entryway sets the tone for the entire space. It’s also where most dirt enters the apartment.

Wipe and reset:

Front door handle

Light switches

Intercom panels

Shoe mats

Key trays or entry consoles

Handrails, if applicable

This is also the easiest place to build a maintenance habit. A quick two-minute reset when you come home can prevent dirt from spreading through the rest of the apartment.

How Long Does It Take to Clean an Apartment?

The time required depends on the size of the apartment, how long it has been since the last deep clean, whether you have pets living indoors, and whether you plan to clean inside appliances, baseboards, or interior windows.

As a general rule:

A light maintenance clean may take a few hours

A full deep clean usually takes significantly longer

Move-in or move-out cleaning often requires extra time because empty spaces reveal dust, marks, and forgotten corners

If you’re short on time, divide the work into zones over two days. Clean the kitchen and bathroom on day one, then tackle living areas and floors on day two. For most people, that approach is far more realistic than trying to power through everything in a single session.

How to Keep an Apartment Clean Without Falling Behind

The easiest way to maintain a clean apartment is to avoid relying only on deep cleaning.

Simple Maintenance Routine

Daily:

Wash dishes or load the dishwasher

Wipe kitchen counters

Do a fast bathroom sink check

Put clutter back where it belongs

Weekly:

Vacuum or sweep floors

Mop kitchen and bathroom floors

Clean the toilet, sink, and shower surfaces

Dust visible surfaces

Change bedding

Carpet cleaning

Monthly:

Wipe baseboards

Clean inside the microwave

Check the refrigerator for expired food

Dust vents, frames, and less-used corners

Many apartment cleaning guides recommend similar routines, but the real trick is keeping it realistic for city living: quick resets, efficient routines for small spaces, and a clear difference between everyday cleaning and occasional deep cleaning (Pure Flow Clean, 2025; White Glove Cleaner, 2024; New York’s Best Maids, 2025).

When to Hire a Professional Apartment Cleaning Service

A professional clean can make sense if:

You are moving in or out

You have fallen behind on cleaning and do not know where to start

You want a thorough deep clean before guests, a new baby, or a busy season

You need help with appliance interiors, baseboards, or other detailed tasks

You want a recurring service to keep everything under control

Apartment cleaning costs usually depend on the size of the apartment, your location, the type of cleaning required, and how often the service is scheduled. Industry pricing data highlights these same variables, so it is usually best to request a custom quote based on your layout and priorities instead of than relying on a generic estimate (HomeAdvisor, 2025).

Questions to Ask Before You Book

What is included in a standard clean versus a deep clean?

Are inside appliances included?

Do you bring your own supplies and equipment?

Are you insured and bonded?

Do you offer safer product options if requested?

Is there a supervisor or quality-check process?

Can the checklist be tailored to my apartment?

For Opura, residential services include standard, deep, and move-in or move-out cleaning for apartments, condos, townhomes, and houses. Services can include kitchen and bathroom detailing, baseboards, appliance interiors, floor polishing, and optional add-ons.
What to Do Next

If you’d rather hand off the heavier work, Opura offers apartment cleaning across New York City, Nassau County, and Northern New Jersey.

If your boat has been sitting in winter storage or tied up at the dock for months, a quick rinse usually is not enough. Summer prep is your chance to remove built-up grime, deal with trapped moisture, and catch small issues before they become expensive problems.

This “How to get your boat ready for summer” guide is for boat owners in New York City, Nassau County, and Northern New Jersey who want their boat clean, safe, and guest-ready before the season ramps up.

For those who prefer professional help, Opura provides marine-safe interior and exterior boat cleaning for docked, trailered, or stored vessels.

Start With a Full Walk-Through

Before you start scrubbing, take a slow walk-through of the boat from bow to stern. This inspection helps you separate light cosmetic cleaning from areas that need deeper attention.

Look closely at:

Seats and cushions for mildew, cracking, or sticky residue

Deck surfaces for grime, algae, and slippery non-skid areas

Cabin walls, flooring, carpets, and storage compartments for dampness or odor

Metal hardware for salt residue or corrosion

Windows, hatches, and seals for clouding, leaks, or grime

Bilge and enclosed compartments for standing water

This initial check helps you plan the rest of your summer boat prep more effectively. It can also reveal early signs of moisture damage, which is common on boats that have been closed up for months.

Clean the Exterior Before Buildup Gets Worse

Exterior cleaning is about more than appearance. Salt, dirt, and organic buildup can wear down finishes and make maintenance harder once the season is underway.

A proper exterior cleaning reset usually includes:

Rinsing the hull and topsides above the waterline

Washing rails, hatches, deck surfaces, and glass

Cleaning non-skid areas carefully so they stay safe underfoot

Wiping exterior seating and high-touch surfaces

Drying surfaces thoroughly to cut down on spotting

If your boat moves between different waterways, it is also smart to follow a Clean, Drain, Dry routine. The US Fish and Wildlife Service recommends cleaning the hull and equipment, draining water from compartments, and letting everything dry to help reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species (US Fish and Wildlife Service, n.d.).

Don’t Skip Boat Interior Cleaning

Boat interior cleaning is one of the most important steps in getting your vessel ready for summer. It is also one of the easiest tasks to delay.

Start with the areas most likely to trap humidity:

Seats and cushions

Cabins and sleeping areas

Lockers and enclosed storage

Flooring and steps

Coolers, drawers, and galley surfaces

Begin by vacuuming loose debris. Then wipe hard surfaces with products designed for the material. Use only enough moisture to clean the surface without soaking it. In enclosed spaces, excess water only increases drying time and raises the risk of mildew.

This step becomes especially important if the boat smells stale when you first open it. Mold tends to grow where moisture lingers, often around leaks, on damp surfaces, and inside enclosed areas that stay wet too long. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).

How to Clean Boat Seats Safely

Seats are often the first place signs of neglect appear. They collect sunscreen, spills, damp towels, and body oils, and can trap moisture if the boat has been stored closed.

For routine seat care:

Remove dry dirt first using a soft cloth or brush

Use a vinyl-safe or upholstery-safe cleaner appropriate for the material

Test the product on a small hidden area first

Avoid abrasive pads or rough brushes

Dry the seats completely before covering or closing the boat

If you see mildew, be careful. The CDC notes that some people should not clean mold themselves, including those with weakened immune systems, chronic lung disease, or asthma. The agency also recommends gloves, eye protection, and at least an N95 respirator for mold cleanup, and says bleach should never be mixed with ammonia or other cleaners (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024).

For minor surface marks, careful cleaning may solve the problem. However, widespread staining, recurring mildew, or persistent odors are often better handled by a professional boat cleaning service.

Choose Lower-Risk Cleaning Products When Possible

Not every household cleaning product is suitable for marine environments. Harsh chemicals can leave residue, damage finishes, and create unnecessary exposure inside tight cabin spaces.

The EPA’s Safer Choice program identifies products and ingredients that meet its human health and environmental criteria, while still meeting product performance standards (US Environmental Protection Agency, 2024). Opura also offers EPA Safer Choice options on request, which fit well with a lower-toxicity, low-odor approach for enclosed marine spaces.

Your Boat Safety Checklist

Cleaning is only part of preparing your boat for summer. Before your first outing, take time to confirm the basics are in place.

Use this checklist:

Confirm life jackets and other safety gear are on board

Check storage compartments and bilge areas for moisture

Review your forecast and local marine conditions

Make sure your registration and onboard documents are current

Check that walkways, steps, and deck surfaces are clean and safe

The National Weather Service advises boaters to check weather forecasts and marine conditions before heading out (National Weather Service, n.d.). In New York, operators of motorized vessels are also required to complete a state-approved safe boating course under Brianna’s Law (New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, n.d.).

When to Book a Professional Boat Cleaning Service

A professional boat cleaning service is worth considering when:

Your boat has been in storage for several months

You notice mildew on the seating or inside the cabin

You want a full seasonal reset before regular use

The boat is docked and easier to service on-site

You need both interior and exterior cleaning completed together

You prefer an insured team working with structured checklists and supervision

Questions to Ask Before You Book

What is included in the standard service scope?

Do you clean both interior and exterior surfaces?

Are your products marine-safe for vinyl, fiberglass, and non-skid materials?

Can you work at a marina, dock, driveway, or storage facility?

Are you fully insured and bonded?

Do you offer both one-time seasonal prep and recurring maintenance?

Opura’s boat cleaning service is built around these practical needs, with trained teams, supervisor oversight, safer product options on request, and flexible service plans across NYC, Nassau County, and Northern New Jersey.

What to Do Next

If your boat needs more than a light wipe-down, start by making a short list. Note areas with visible buildup, check for mildew or trapped moisture, and decide what you can safely handle yourself.

For deeper cleaning, interior mildew, or a full seasonal reset, professional service can save time and prevent long-term damage.

Call Opura at +1 718 969 0845 or request a quote to schedule your summer boat cleaning in NYC, Nassau County, or Northern New Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions About Getting Your Boat Ready

When should you clean your boat for summer?

Ideally, clean it before the first trip of the season, especially after storage. That gives you time to spot mildew, stains, cracked vinyl, or missing gear before launch day.

What is included in boat interior cleaning?

It typically covers seats, cabins, consoles, compartments, flooring, storage areas, and wipe-down of hard surfaces. Scope varies by boat size and condition.

How long does summer boat prep take?

A light seasonal reset may take a few hours. A boat with heavy buildup, mildew, or multiple interior zones can take longer.

Do I need special products for boat cleaning?

Usually, yes. Marine-safe products are better suited to vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, and non-skid surfaces than general household cleaners.

Does New York require anything before I operate my boat this season?

If you operate a motorboat in New York, the boating safety course requirement matters. Check current state requirements before your first trip.

What Is Spring Cleaning?

Spring cleaning means going beyond routine weekly tasks. It focuses on deep cleaning areas that are often skipped during regular upkeep.

Unlike basic surface cleaning, spring cleaning targets:

Built-up dust behind and under furniture

Grime inside appliances

Closets and storage areas that need a reset

Carpets and upholstery that trap soil and odors

It’s a simple enough goal: remove hidden buildup, improve indoor air, and start the season fresh.

When Should You Start Spring Cleaning in 2026?

Many people wonder when the best time to spring clean is, and being in the opening months of 2026, it’s a pretty good question! Truth is, there’s no fixed date for a spring clean. Most households begin between early March and late May.

When to start spring cleaning depends on:

Local weather and daylight

Your schedule and home routines

Whether windows can be opened for airflow

In colder climates like NYC and Northern New Jersey, late March or early April often works best. Choose a weekend or block time across two to four weeks to avoid burnout.

How to Use This Spring Cleaning Checklist

A full spring clean doesn’t need to happen in one day. For better results:

Clean one room at a time

Break the checklist into weekends

Focus on high-impact areas first

Keep donation boxes nearby for clutter

Work from top to bottom in each space. Dust first, clean surfaces next, and finish with floors and carpets.

Spring Cleaning Checklist by Area

Start your spring cleaning by moving room by room so nothing gets overlooked and each space receives the attention it needs.

Kitchen

The kitchen collects grease, crumbs, and hidden buildup over winter. Your spring cleaning checklist for the kitchen should include:

Empty and wipe cabinets inside and out

Clean refrigerator shelves and drawers

Pull out appliances and clean behind them

Degrease backsplash and vent hood surfaces

Sanitize countertops and high-touch areas

Mop floors and detail baseboards

Don’t forget pantry checks. Toss expired items and wipe shelving before restocking.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms require deeper attention during a spring cleanup. Focus on:

Scrubbing tile grout and corners

Cleaning shower tracks and glass

Wiping exhaust fans and vents

Disinfecting handles and fixtures

Organizing under-sink storage

Washing bath mats and shower curtains

Ventilation is key! Open windows or run fans while cleaning to avoid the fumes from your cleaning products overwhelming you.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms collect dust in areas you rarely see. Add these to your spring cleaning house checklist:

Rotate or vacuum mattresses (yes, this is important!)

Wash pillows and bedding

Declutter and rotate seasonal clothing

Wipe closet shelves and rods

Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
